How to Care is
the result of my 14 year caregiving odyssey with my father
Ralph who died April 24, 2000. It is a tribute to my father
and to all older Canadians who suffer and fight to triumph
over terribly disabling chronic illnesses. Most of all How
to Care is my ongoing contribution to and support for the
millions of caregivers who give your time, your energy and
your love to those for whom you care.
When I started
caring for my father after my mother's death in 1986, I had
no idea this experience would change my life completely. I
didn't know becoming a caregiver would inspire me to create
a new way of life dedicated to helping other caregivers find
answers and support “ in a society which places too little
value on these "invisible angels." I didn't understand how
critical it would be to become my own health care advocate.
Even though I have
been writing and speaking from the heart about my experiences
for the past 5 years, I still have much to share with others.
I also have much
to learn. Therefore How to Care will be an ongoing dialogue
between me and Canadian caregivers; the end result will be
an enriching resource continually in the making, a safe place
for you to share your caregiving burdens and triumphs.
Even though my
father has passed away my caregiving journey will never end.
I will continue to pass on what I have learned and how I have
grown as a woman and contributor to society as long as you
need me to do so. And from the looks of things “ as our aging
population continues to grow and our healthcare dollars continue
to shrink, this need will last for many years to come.
